We are happy to announce that Ghassan Moussawi has co-edited a special issue of Sociological Forum alongside Mary Romero, titled ". Authoritarianism, Resistance, Coloniality: Lessons from the Global South [special issue]" (2026).
Addressing how the globalization of the economy, growing right-wing regimes and shifting alliances place Western countries in crisis, the special issue emphasizes that US sociology can no longer rely solely on Euro-centric dialogue to theorize changing social orders. By centering Global South conceptual frameworks and sociological knowledge, the issue advances scholarship produced by sociologists who have long documented resistance against authoritarian governments, empire, environmental destruction, and state violence.
